Martin A. Clayman
Martin A. Clayman has more than 45 years of experience in commercial litigation and business transactions.
He devotes a significant part of his practice to entity formation and regulatory compliance, commercial leasing and
commercial financing transactions. Included among his business clients are residential and commercial real estate developers,
entrepreneurs and a variety of business entities and not-for-profit organizations for whom he has provided legal counsel and
representation in complex financial and business transactions.
Marty's experience as a litigator (developed during four years as a State Prosecutor), coupled with his many years of
business law experience, enables him to skillfully engage in commercial litigation in federal and state courts.
He is also an active participant in alternative dispute resolution matters having extensive experience with mediation and
arbitration. He currently serves on the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and the American Dispute
Founder of the Franchise Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and former Chairman of its Executive Committee,
he is very active in the practice of Franchise Law. He is an active member of the Forum Committee on Franchising of the
American Bar Association. In addition, he frequently lectures and writes articles in the areas of business and franchise
law. Marty represents local, regional and national franchisors and franchisees who have come to rely on his expertise
in this highly specialized field. Evaluation, analysis and implementation of franchise opportunities, preparation of
franchise documents, compliance with state and federal laws and franchise litigation are but a few of the services he
provides for franchise clients.
In conjunction with his franchise practice, he practices federal and state trademark law which enables him to better
serve his franchise as well as his general business clients. He has been selected by his peers to be included in
Woodward/White Inc.'s The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Franchise Law from 2005 through 2010 and was selected
by his peers as a Greater Hartford Top Lawyer as published in Hartford Magazine in 2006, 2010 and 2011. He is included
in the Best Lawyers of New England in the area of Franchise Law in 2009 and Best Lawyers in the New York Area in 2010.
He has also been included in the Connecticut Super Lawyers in the areas of business and corporate law and Franchise for
2007 through 2012 and in the New York Area's Top Attorneys for 2011. He has an AVVO rating of 10 (Superb). AVVO is an
independent agency which rates doctors and lawyers.
After graduating from Loomis-Chaffee Institute in Windsor, Connecticut, he attended Yale University where he received
his B.A. degree. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1962 and is a member
of the Connecticut and American Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court,
United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
